Obviously January is the time when people set resolutions and goals and vow to be better but I was looking through my stash of readables and decided, you know what? I’m not gonna wait. The time is going to pass anyway, as they say, you might as well use it… you know, now.
I find myself in charge of all three kids by myself for the week since my husband is out of town and we ended up watching the Rockefeller Christmas tree lighting. After that went off Making It with Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman came on. I had been wanting to watch this show but hadn’t caught it yet. What a perfect night for it because I have been re-reading Amy’s book Yes Please.

It might seem like a strange idea to find inspiration from a book by a lady comedian but trust me, there is plenty in there to uplift you. The intro alone sees Amy revealing her doubt about writing a book and yet, there it is, and a NYT bestseller to boot.
It follows some of her childhood, her early improv days, her work with Upright Citizens Brigade and SNL. All along the way she is candid. She mentions what she calls “The Demon” which is her name for the shitty little voice that tells us we’re not good enough and shows the reader that through all of it, even when you have doubts, you can still do this- whatever your ‘this’ may be.
So I absolutely think that everyone will get something from this book but I also think it should be required reading for young women. I mean, the sections have titles like “Say what you want.” and what youngster can’t use a little push to be themselves? Since her book came out Amy has continued this amazing work as co-founder of Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. It’s an incredible resource that encourages “young people cultivate their authentic selves.”.
On top of the inspiration factor the book is just damn fun. I love SNL anyway so hearing some of the backstage story is really cool. In every posed photo Amy looks like she’s having a ball.
Making It is also amazing by the way and I love Nick Offerman too. He and Megan Mullaly are InstaCouple goals. He/they have books out too and I know what I’m requesting for Christmas… Amy also looks suspiciously like Nick in this photo from Yes Please.

So for December my plan is to follow the theme of books that inspire me in some way. It’s a busy time but I love to share and we don’t have to wait til January to start being better versions of ourselves.
