Well, I was going to go lighter with the next few posts after that craziness that I dumped all over you all but I picked up this book and read it in under 24 hours, it was that engrossing.
I am fascinated by true crime and this is one of the most “popular” unsolved cases in modern crime.
It tells the stories of five women who were murdered by someone who has been dubbed the Long Island Serial Killer (LISK). It also tells the story of Shannan Gilbert who was found in the same area but hasn’t been positively connected to the others. There are also several other bodies, some of which remain unidentified, that were found in the same stretch of the New York coast.
This book is broken into two parts. The first part tells the stories of the five women who are assumed to have been killed by the same person. They all worked as Craigslist prostitutes and they disappeared without much concern from the police. No matter how you feel about modern sex work these are women who had families and children. I think that it is important to know who the victims are even if you don’t agree with how they lived their lives.
The second part of the book tells how the victims’ families are dealing with the losses and how they are pushing the police and the residents of the small island where they were all found to open up and figure this out.
While the book doesn’t leave you with any rock solid answers it does provide a view of some of the strange behavior from the above mentioned residents. The gated community they live in is full of rumors, tall tales, and conflicting stories. It’s frustrating but I hope that some day the police and the FBI can untangle the web and find the killer, resident or not.
Unfortunately, the odds that this person simply quit killing because they uncovered his dumping ground are slim to nil. The quicker the authorities can come up with some answers, the more lives will be saved. It will also finally give the families of all these victims the closure that they so deserve.
